This is an interesting question...because we must remember that hula today is so different from hula 50 years ago... Even the way we classify hula is different. People need to remember that in calling something hula kahiko...or calling something hula \'auwana...is to use contemporary or modern terminology. These terms were actually coined, I believe, by Uncle George Naope in the beginnings of the Merrie Monarch hula competition. There needed to be a way to segregate the hula that was done with chanting and a traditional hula implement from everything else within the spectrum of Hawaiian music. In the old days...most of what is now referred to as hula kahiko...used to called the hula \'olapa. But not all of it...because there is also hula pahu, and hula noho, and so on. What also needs to be remembered is that there were huge differences between the types too...their mechanics were fundamentally different. Most kumu today don\'t even remember, but they were different even down to the basics used. On the other hand...what is now referred to as hula \'auwana used to be referred to as hula ku\'i...because it was that hula that could be done without ritual or ceremony. It was that hula that could travel and dance where ever. So instead of trying to define hula \'auwana...I challenge you to look beyond kahiko and \'auwana...and explore what we before...

According to Mary Kawena Puku\'i - Hula \'Auana, noun. - Informal Hula without ceremony or offering, contrasted with the hula kuahu; modern hula. \'Auana is defined as - to wander, drift, ramble, go from place to place, to stray morally or mentally. A hula \'auana is a hula that is a contemporary style as opposed to a hula kahiko (a traditional style hula). Currently hula \'auana is a style used with hapa haole music including signing, guitars, pianos, bass, and \'ukulele as the accompaniment for hula \'auana. Singing for hula \'auana can be in either Hawaiian, English or both.
