How sad to see a part of our culture being exploited only for money. I have seen many Halau around the world who are running only for the profit. You can tell when the haumana dance that there is no feeling in what they do. It's almost like watching stick figures moving in a flipbook. (Sometimes it seems like the stick figures would have more feeling). It's hard to tell which Halau will be right for you. If possible, I would visit the Halau, go to one of their shows/performances, talk with some of the Haumana, or if possible, talk with the Kumu Hula to see what the Halau does. Some of the questions that come to my mind are : What do they learn? Do they only learn dances? Do they have to do research/are they given a lot of information? Do they have huaka'i? Is it only about hula? Or do they do things outside of hula? (Fun outtings, Parties, Dinners, etc.)(I find that Kumu Hula who spend time with their Haumana outside of hula are more connected/closer to their Haumana because they spend the time getting to know the person, not just the dancer) See how you feel about the Halau. If it doesn't feel right, then maybe that Halau is not for you. Trust your na'au! I know Junko's situation all too well as I know many women in Japan who are searching for a Kumu/Kumu Hula. Although there are many well-known and well respected Kumu Hula in Japan now, most of the women I talked to do not want to dance for someone well-known. Maybe it's the fear of being mistreated and used for money again. Some of them have told me they just want to learn hula and the culture, they do not care who they are dancing for as long as they get to learn and feel like their Kumu cares for them/loves them. Junko, I pray you find the right Kumu Hula for you!

Junko... I pray that you don\'t need this information because that would mean that you have found a good halau of traditional hula in Japan. However...if you have not, I have an offering for you. One of my kumu relocated to Japan a few years ago and now teaches hula in a brand new dance studio in Higashi-Mikuni, Osaka city. Please contact him...his name is Kumu Michael Canopin. http://www.halaukealakapawa.org

If teaching is only money making (for the profit), then it\'s no longer hula. The culture teaches us that if there is a willingness to learn, then satisfy the need with quality teaching. :S

Dear:zeyar I look for a Japanese school of true Halau. In tokyo, there is many a Japanese school of Halau. But In kansai-area has not it.(Kyoto or Osaka.I live in kyoto). Please teach me it if there is the information that the Halau has a new Japanese school. Or please teach me it if there is a method to get the information.

Dear:Kainoa Thank you for writing your message. I should raise our Hula level. And I wish Hula\'s splendor spreads out to a lot of people.

I am glad you asked this question, there are many hula teachers that teach as a means of making money. It is hard to distinguish which kumu teach as a job versus teaching to perpetuate the Hawaiian Culture. So how would you know which kumu to go to if you want to learn Hawaiian Culture and hula to get the true cultural meaning behind the dances? This is a difficult question, although I believe it is preference for the student to pick the proper kumu that will teach the style they want. Does anyone have a way to help Junko with what I\'m sure many people have the same dilemma?

Dear Junko, I would first of all say thank you. There are many people out there today, in Hawai`i, Japan, all over the world, whom teach hula just to make money. The truth being that hula is a very large money making buisness. I would like to thank you for wanting to learn hula beyond a coconut bra and celophane skirt. The true essence of hula goes way beyond that of a pretty girl on Waikiki. So, I strongly encourage you to go out and learn traditional hula, learn the way that I am being taught, the way many others are being taught, and the way our ancestors were taught. Learn genuine hula.

The Japanese kumu can\'t teach us Hawaiian culture and the history of hula. Because they are only dancing. Now,many people start hula in Japan. I would like to ask Japanese kumu. Is hula only money-making? I need halau which teaches genuine hula. How do you think of this situation? Can you understand my message? I\'m sorry. Because I can\'t write English very well.
